BURLINGTON NAKED BIKE RIDE 2007
The Burlington World Naked Bike Ride took place today on June 9, 2007. As expected, it was a great success!
Riders and onlookers began gathering before 1:00pm at the Rose Street
Artists Co-op. A bunch of riders had themselves body painted by a lady
who did a great job on everyone. Really nice Burlington Naked Bike
Ride T-shirts were available for $10.00 each. Several News
Organizations were on site including Burlingtons WCAX and CityTV from Canada.
At precisely 2:00pm everyone got on their bikes, many with signs
denouncing gas and oil dependency, and the ride began down Rose Street
to North Street. Onlookers lined the streets in the old north end as
the ride progressed to North Winooski Avenue and on to Pearl Street.
We wound our way through downtown Burlington and large crowds of
onlookers lined the streets cheering and shouting their support (and
gleeful surprise in many cases), particularly where Church Street
meets Bank Street, College Street and Main Street. We stopped in front
of "Stone Soup" on College Street, who for the third year in a row,
provided the riders with lemonade. (Visit them sometime!) We proceeded
down Main Street and wound our way up Saint Paul and past City Hall
Park and back onto College Street again. To wind up the ride, we went
back up North Winooski Avenue to Cherry Street and around to Pearl and
over Elmwood Avenue back to Rose Street.
All the riders stood outside for a group photo (which we hope someone
will provide to us so we can post it). People re-dressed and went on
to various parties and afternoon activities of their own. Everyone was
extremely well-behaved and we all appreciate that very much.
We estimated we had between 65 and 75 bike riders this year but
Burlington TV Station WCAX estimated we had 100 riders. Therefore, we
are offically going to say that we had 75-100 riders.
We did not have a post-ride party this year as we were unable to
secure a good local spot for a party. We were offered two different
out of town locations that would have been great for a clothing
optional party, but the locations were quite far from Burlington. We
had hoped for a local spot for a party so people could easily bike
there but it didn't work out that way. We PROMISE we WILL have a
location for a party after next year's Naked Bike Ride and it will be
easy and quick to bike ride to!
Thank you to all the riders who took part in Burlington's Naked Bike
Ride 2007! You were all fun, friendly and and great to ride with. We
hope you join us again next summer 2008!
Thank you also to Michael, Adrian, Lena, (and others) (and me :-) for
putting this bike ride together. These guys did a lot of behind the
scenes work to help make the ride happen and it all came together
perfectly.
I had so much fun this year that I felt kind of sad that the ride is
only once a year. It occurred to me that even though our message of
Love, Harmony, Less dependence on oil and the promotion of good old
fashioned pedal power is only once a year via our naked bike ride, we
can still enjoy biking naked throughout the summer.
I have therefore created http://www.bikenakedburlington.com and http://www.bikenakedvermont.com .
These sites, which will end at only one website, will bring everyone
together who would like to bike ride naked in Burlington and other
parts of Vermont throughout the spring, summer and fall. These
websites are coming soon!
If you have any photos or videos of the ride, please email them to us at ride@worldnakedbikerideburlington.com
Once again, thank you all for being part of our ride. See you all at
next years World Naked Bike Ride Burlington!
+PEACE+
